Mr. Anthony Standing was the worship leader last Sunday. Mr Dave Taberer read from Mark's gospel, chapter 10, verses 17-26. The pianist was Miss Helen Standing and the welcome stewards were Mr. and Mrs. Taberer. The speaker was Mr. Carl Smith, who began by drawing attention to the fact that all the hymns and songs were appropriating Jesus as Lord and Saviour and went on to state that most of the people who came into contact with Jesus were gloriously changed. Referring to the Rich young man in the reading, Mr. Smith said the encounter with Christ ended tragically because he did not appreciate what it meant to be saved and people today have no understanding of what it takes to be saved. We know from the gospels that this man was rich, young and a ruler. He was an important member of the community with many things going for him. He was young, that's the best time to come to the Lord. He had wealth. Money in itself is not wrong, but when it controls us it is evil. The young man kept the commandments and outwardly was pure. He was a ruler who people looked up to. In spite of all this there was something missing. Youthful activity did not fulfil his life any more than wealth or power. What he wanted most was peace with God. We all may know people who seem to have a perfect life. They have everything materially to live comfortably and enjoy life, but they are not prepared to die. There is something missing. The young man came to the right person and came in the right way, running because he recognised the urgency of the situation. Life could end at any moment and we need to know if we are saved. The young man came and knelt, recognising Jesus was worthy and he wasn't. He had the right things on his heart yet he doesn't have the answer. Today some people do not know the most basic, important question - how to get to heaven. The young man wanted to know and didn't put it off to a more convenient time. He had to know what he must do to inherit eternal life. Yet salvation is not about what we do, but what Jesus has done. All we have to do is accept His sacrifice by faith. Salvation is the gift of God's grace. Thinking Jesus was a teacher was not enough. He is God in the flesh. He is the Truth. Finding out who Jesus is, is an important step in accepting Him. Like so many today that young man was rich, but spiritually bankrupt. Nothing should be more important than our relationship with Jesus. He says come and follow me. This Sunday at 11 am. the speaker will be Rev. John Welsby from Haverfordwest. Crusaders youth group meet on Tuesday at 6-7.30 pm. Oasis Lunch Fellowship is at 12.30 pm on Wednesday and Home Group meet at 7.30 pm.
