Junior section

Heatherton juniors had three triples teams in the Welsh National competition at the Earlswood Bowls Centre recently.

For Cam White, Gemma Amos and Joe Dennis, it was an early start and with all three getting into their stride, they established an early lead, which they held and ran out winners, 21-6.

Ben Cloake, Luke Rees and Adam Hensman were up against a strong Dinefwr team, skipped by Scott Williams, and try as they did, the Heatherton team could not make any  headway against their opponents and ended up losing the match.

The other early starters for Heatherton were Ysie White, Ryan Thomas and skip Liam Price. They fell behind early in the match, but then picked up their game, and with all three putting in some good woods, they finished up winning 14-10.

The triples of Cam White, Gemma Amos and skip Joe Dennis had another match to play and again took command from the start. With steady bowling, they kept ahead of their  Ogwr opponents, winning 19-7.

Liam and Joe's teams will now take part in the next round of the Welsh in March and if they bowl as they can, they have no one to fear.

Heatherton players and coaches wish to congratulate Ysie White on being selected for the Welsh Under 25 squad in Belfast on January 16 and 17. We wish her all the best.

Junior Rinks

Two junior rinks from Heatherton made the journey to Port Talbot on Saturday, December 20, for a 9.30am start in the national rinks competition.

The rink of Ben Cloake, Luke Rees, Gemma Amos and skip Joe Dennis lost the first end, but then with Ben, who had stepped in at the last minute, and Luke putting in first class bowls, they took command.

With Gemma and Joe both bowling well, too, they took an early five, then followed with a seven, to give themselves a good lead. Despite losing four ends on the run, however, they controlled the game, only giving away ones, to win 22-11.

The Heatherton rink of Cameron White, Ysie White, Ryan Thomas and skip Liam Price had a hard game on their hands.

They also lost the first end and from then on it was a tough fight, but with young Cam bowling consistently and well backed by his sister Ysie, they gave Ryan and Liam the chance to stay in the game.

The last end saw them two shots down, but Ryan bowled a superb wood to take the jack into the ditch and with Liam supporting with his last bowls, they finished winning 14-12. A very close game.

Both teams rose to the occasion on the day, harder matches are ahead, but both teams are capable of going further.
