Not many Steps2Health walks end with the singing of Lilli Marlene in a WW2 underground air-raid shelter (writes B.S.).
But on Saturday, after a frosty but sunny walk around the Carding Mill Nature Trail, it was back to a less peaceful era when even such a remote corner as Carew Cheriton was fighting for the life of Britain.
Dark days they may have been, but here at the refurbished RAF Control Tower, those times are brought alive with great feeling, sensitivity and, above all, good humour, as John Brock OBE and John Harris held the large group spellbound with their illuminating account of life on this very spot. We were even sitting on the same chairs as those used by the airmen of over 60 years ago.
This is certainly no museum, but a living testimony to the courage of those who came from all parts of the globe to join the fight for freedom.
Carew Cheriton may have been far from the major battlefields, but it was an integral part of the war machine as Coastal Command Squadron protected the shipping convoys and bombing raids were carried out along the French coast. The nearby war graves sadly tell not all were successful.
Although many of the walkers had enjoyed a visit to the Control Tower last year, the enthusiasm of the two Johns bubbled over into yet more entertaining tales we had not previously heard.
The present day community of Carew certainly keeps alive the memory of the sacrifice, hardships and laughter too, of the small airfield that played a big part in our fight for survival.
All the walkers very much appreciated being taken on such a journey into the past.
Tomorrow (Saturday) we return to the present and will be meeting outside Somerfield 10.30 am for a local walk and not the Saundersfoot walk as advertised.
Tenby will be gearing up for the festive season and so we look forward to a lively and interesting time.
