Fresh, healthy food served at Ysgol Bro Ingli in Newport has been dished up not just to the children, but also their mums and dads. Parents and visitors to the Bro Ingli Summer Fayre at the Parrog were treated to a range of healthy salads, home-made carrot muffins, and fruit from the school's summer menu. "The feedback was overwhelmingly positive," said Elizabeth Callard, sustainable school food procurement officer at Pembrokeshire County Council. Elizabeth has been leading a 12-month feasibility project at Newport and Tenby Junior Schools to introduce more fresh, seasonal and local produce into school lunches. "The School Fayre gave parents and visitors the chance to see the variety and quality of the foods the children have been eating," she said. "Many who enquired were surprised at the number of ingredients actually grown in Pembrokeshire - including carrots, many salad ingredients, and all the herbs." She said parents requested recipes, and were pleased that their children were not only being offered a variety of fresh food, but that they were actually eating and enjoying it!" Meanwhile, at Tenby Junior School, the children have been improving their knowledge of dairy produce. They recently visited Sarngwm, Rob Gibby's farm near Narberth, which supplies milk to the school under its own 'Llaeth Bethesda' label. The children watched one of the herd being milked, stroked day-old and week-old calves, and saw milk being made into butter. "Prior to the visit, the children hadn't appreciated that the milk used by the school cook in such things as custard and Yorkshire puddings is actually produced by cows on a farm not more than 12 miles away from their school!" said Elizabeth Callard. Pembrokeshire County Council has already removed the vast majority of processed food from its school menus and is in the process of piloting healthy food and drink vending machines. The feasibility project aims to build on this work and work within the current menus. It is due to be evaluated in September and it is hoped that many of the lessons learnt will help influence the council's future food procurement strategy.
