HYWEL Dda University Health Board is continuing the rollout of its electronic patient observation system (e-Obs) across acute and community hospitals in Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion.
Dr Anthony Smith, Chief Clinical Information Officer, said: "Electronic observations are helping our teams identify changes in a patient's condition earlier and providing better visibility of important clinical information.”
In Carmarthenshire, e-Obs has already been introduced at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen and Llandovery Hospital. The rollout has also recently been completed at Amman Valley Hospital, while implementation began at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli on 26 October 2026.
In Pembrokeshire, deployment has now been completed at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, as well as South Pembrokeshire Hospital and Tenby Cottage Hospital.
In Ceredigion, the next planned site is Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth, including nearby Y Bwa Ward, with implementation starting this month.
The Health Board aims to complete the remaining rollout activity across all three counties over the coming months, bringing the benefits of the digital system to patients and staff throughout the Hywel Dda area.
The system, supplied by Alcidion, allows healthcare staff to record patients’ vital signs electronically. This helps clinical teams identify patient deterioration earlier and respond more quickly when extra support is needed.
By replacing paper records, e-Obs improves the accuracy of information and makes patient observations easier to see and share. It also reduces administration time, allowing staff to spend more time caring for patients.
Feedback from staff using the new system continues to be positive. Clinical teams have adapted quickly and are already seeing the benefits of improved visibility of patient observations and automatic early warning alerts.
The e-Obs programme forms part of the wider digital transformation taking place across the Health Board to support safer and more efficient care for patients across the Hywel Dda area.
