Local school pupils have been learning what it means to be a doctor at a ‘Future Doctors’ roadshow held recently at Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest.
Pupils from Pembroke School, Tasker Milward School in Haverfordwest and St. Michael’s School in Llanelli attended the event, which was run by the hospital’s Medical Education Department in conjunction with Cardiff Medical School.
The roadshow is one of a series of events aimed at helping to prepare any pupils who are considering medicine as a career. It will help potential doctors in Wales to understand the reality of applying for medicine, the rigours of training as a medic, and what a career as a doctor is really like.
These Year 9 students will have a taste of medical training with a clinical skills workshop in a dedicated facility, plus a chance to speak to medical students, newly qualified junior doctors and staff from Cardiff University about their next steps to further their medical career and secure a successful place at medical school.
Dr Chris James, Honorary Senior Lecturer at Withybush Hospital said: “We are delighted to welcome these students and give them an insight into the wonderful opportunities a medical career can bring.
“We wish them all luck in their careers and hope to welcome them back to Hywel Dda University Health Board in the future.”
