An event to raise awareness of hate crime took place in Tenby last week.
The event was run by the Tenby branch of Soroptimist International, an organisation that works together to transform the lives of women and girls.
It was also run in conjunction with hate crime awareness week.
The organisation doesn’t just aim to raise awareness for hate crime, but other issues such as poverty, education and climate change.
Wendy Bell, programme action officer for the Tenby branch of Soroptimist International, said: “We are making people aware of hate crime.
“We hope it will, our main objective is to make more people aware, it is an awareness project.”
PCSO 8187 Rachel Adams, said: “We find that there may be an under-reporting of hate crime, we want to boost people’s confidence.
“We also want to let them know that there are multiple ways of reporting hate crime, so it doesn’t have to be through your police service.”
Despite the cuts to police services, PCSO Adams rejected suggestions that Dyfed-Powys Police had been put under pressure to deal with the rise in hate crime.
“We (Dyfed-Powys) have taken a lot of action, especially in the past five years, whereby there are a lot of officers who are now hate crime support officers.
“Our job is to raise awareness and also go out to a victim, who perceives to be a hate crime victim, and we would offer support that would be separate to the investigation.”
Finally, the PCSO urged people to speak up if they fall victim of a hate crime.
“Speak up, report it and have a look for our support services in your area.”
If you do fall victim to a hate crime, Dyfed-Powys Police recommeds the following: In an emergency always dial 999, go to a safe place as soon as you can, make as much noise as you can to get attention and get help, always tell the police what has happened.
