Narberth Under 14s overcame a strong challenge from their visitors from Cardigan on Sunday with a spirited all-round team performance.
Kicking off with the wind in their favour, the home youngsters threatened the Cardigan line early on, but were held out by a well-drilled Cardigan side that soon fought their way into the Narberth half.
An exciting equally matched contest developed but, as the game progressed, the Narberth forwards, with a strong performance from the front row of Paul Brown, Luke Davies and Daniel Adams, began to get the better of their opponents. The home number eight, Ben Davies, also impressed with some powerful runs from the base of the scrum.
Shortly before half-time, forward pressure in the Cardigan 22 provided the platform for the ball to be moved quickly along the backline for outside centre Gavin James to cross for the first try.
The second half produced more end-to-end rugby, with the Cardigan attack being blunted by strong tackling, particularly from fly-half Rhodri James, inside centre Rory Bennett and fullback Gethin Salter. Narberth's flankers, Nick Jones and Rion Whatmore, were winning a lot of ball on the ground and, with scrum-half Sam Macnaghton in close support, the ball was being moved along the backline at every opportunity.
It was forward power though that sealed the win when prop Danial Adams forced his way over near the posts following a strong drive upfield by the pack. Both Narberth tries were converted by Rhodri James.
Cardigan ended the stronger but failed to get a deserved score following a long period of pressure in the Narberth 22.
