Sir,
I was given a copy of the Tenby Observer, dated August 21, by my brother Peter Williams, who unlike myself visits our old home on a regular basis. There was an article in your 50 Years Ago column on page 16, about a car that went into the harbour. On the day and at the time that the car (a mark 10 Jaguar automatic) went in, I was swimming off the Stores Steps and was hit by the car.
The Jag landed on my legs, and as it crashed through the railings, these struck me on the head. I managed to paddle my way a few feet to the steps and climb out of the water.
Everyone was quite rightly concerned about the car's occupants, so I made my way to the 'China Cot' cafe in Tudor Square, which was owned by my grandfather. I seem to remember having egg and chips before being taken to Tenby Cottage Hospital to have my ankles bandaged and possibly a tetanus injection.
I'm afraid that after the egg and chips my recollection is sketchy. Though the experience had by the car passengers must have been very traumatic, I may have been the only casualty. I was eight-years-old at the time.
John Williams.
