New Hedges Village Hall was the scene of a happy autumnal evening last Thursday when more than 50 people enjoyed a fund-raising Harvest Supper.
The event - organised by the village's 'Tuesday Ladies' - raised the excellent sum of over £300 for the Hall and Playing Field funds.
The hall and tables were beautifully decorated with a Harvest theme to set the atmosphere for the evening, which began with Alwen Hughes leading the singing of 'We Plough the Fields and Scatter' and 'All Things Bright and Beautiful'.
After Dennis Reed said Grace, everyone did justice to a substantial ploughman's supper before sitting back for a programme of entertainment.
There was great hilarity at the efforts of volunteer country dancers, encouraged by Mrs. Doreen Hammersley, who admitted that she first danced in New Hedges Village Hall over 70 years ago!
A warm welcome awaited that well-known New Hedges character 'Arnold' (alias Dennis Reed), whose tall stories were all the more believable for featuring some local personalities present!
Alwen returned with more songs, to the delight of the appreciative audience, and thanked everyone who had helped to make the evening such a success. Dennis added his thanks to the ladies who had worked so hard to prepare and serve the food.
The fund-raising had been greatly helped thanks to the raffle run by Mrs. Elizabeth Watts in New Hedges village shop. The first prize of a magnificent hamper, donated by Ruth and Matt Goldwait, was won by Mrs. Rene Burnley, with the whisky donated by Peter Watts being won by Mrs. Penny Butland.
A giant Scooby Doo, donated by Tony and Meg Brace, of Priory Farm Shop, was also in the raffle.
Scooby was claimed by Mrs. Anne Vandenbroecke who has kindly given him to the Children's Ward of Withybush Hospital.
