As part of National Shooting Week (May 23-30), Haverfordwest Target Shooting Club is inviting members of the public with an interest in shooting to visit them during the week to see what they do.

The club, which was formerly a pistol club before the change in the handgun laws, has been established for over 40 years and maintains a competitive atmosphere both internally and indeed internationally.

The club motto is 'no competition too hard, no distance too far'.

Over the years, the club has hosted various national and international competitions, including the European 'Mini' Commonwealth Games.

Club shooters regularly take part in national and international competitions, and over the years, these competitors have won a host of medals for Wales, including a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games some years ago (Wales' only Commonwealth shooting medal). It hosts annually the Welsh Muzzle Loading Championships, as well as the Welsh Western Action Shooting Competition.

Today, the club prides itself over its friendly atmosphere and great span of shooting activities. The club facilities are excellent and allow for air rifle and pistol shooting in an indoor 10-metre range, as well as outdoor (covered firing points) shooting at 25 and on the soon to be completed 50-metre ranges.

Disciplines are eclectic to say the least. Members shoot small bore (rimfire .22-inch) rifles and long barrelled pistols, as well as black powder revolvers and pistol.

Many members take part in the gallery rifle competitions, shot using full bore (centre fire cartridges above .32-inch) lever action rifles such as the Winchester, or the newer long barrelled revolvers.

If you visit the range, you may also see some of the more exotic guns of the past being fired such as the Brown Bess, the Snider and Martini Henry, as well as the American Springfield rifle. Whatever your interest, you will be sure to find some like-minded members in the club.

The Open Day times are Wednesday, May 27, from 2 to 6 pm and Saturday, May 30, from 10 am to 2 pm.

The club ranges are situated in Haverfordwest at the end of Withybush Road, past the County Showground, and nearly on the airfield. Further details of the open days and location maps can be found on the web at http://www.haverfordwestshootingclub.org.uk">www.haverfordwestshootingclub.org.uk
