Having taken part in a Rotary Shoebox Scheme for Easter some years ago, the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot initiated a small Christmas gift operation for Christmas 2006. This was very much appreciated so, this year, the club was encouraged to attempt a larger effort involving other organisations in the Saundersfoot area. Those taking part included local schools, churches, chapels, the Women's Institute and many individuals, together with club members. The scheme, which started in 1994, is quite simple. Special boxes, which are about the size of a shoebox, are supplied by the Rotary Club. Each box is filled with gift items from one of the following categories: toys, teenage or household goods. These simple items, that we so often take for granted, make such a difference to the recipients. The filled boxes are then collected and stored locally. Last Thursday, the shoeboxes were transferred to the local depot in Cardigan to be collected and transported to the Rotary warehouse in Manchester the next day. This should give sufficient time for the gifts to be taken across Europe in time for Christmas. The Rotary Club of Saundersfoot would like to express its thanks to all those who took part in the scheme. It is certain that these gifts will be greatly appreciated by recipients in Central and Eastern Europe.
