At the Pembroke Garden Village we are focusing on the kitchen garden this week. We pride ourselves on being one of the few garden centres which offers a full rang of vegetable plants as well as herbs, fruit trees and bushes. The press is always full of reminders to 'eat healthily' and 'eat five a day'. What could be nicer than popping out to your own garden, no matter how small, and picking fresh vegetables and fruit for your family or finishing off a special dish with home grown fresh herbs. We have caulis and cabbages, broccoli and broad beans, leeks, tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce, onion sets, numerous varieties of seed potatoes, as well as organic seeds. You don't need a large plot to feed your family; just three runner bean and tomato plants per person in the household will be ample. Salad veg grown at home instead of expensively flown in from abroad are easily grown in a tub, so start sowing straightaway; try adding a few spring onions and radishes and sow throughout the summer for your very own supply of baby salad leaves. If you are sowing in open ground, opt for an organic fertiliser such as chicken manure pellets or blood fish and bone. Find out about growing a fruit tree in a barrel or growing your own potato crop in a container. Don't hesitate to ask our helpful staff for advice if you have never, 'grown your own' before. Come along this week and get started straightaway. You can find us on the A477, just two miles from Pembroke Dock. We have all that you will need with organic compost and fertilisers so you can start your very own kitchen garden as soon as you like.
