Pupils at Greenhill School, Tenby, are being advised on the dangers of alcohol abuse and given the opportunity to register with Pembrokeshire County Council's 'Validate-Voluntary Proof of Age' Scheme.
The scheme provides children with a personalised card highlighting their age and is seen as a positive step towards preventing sales of cigarettes and alcohol to under-aged people.
The launch of the scheme has been supported by local police at Tenby.
Acting Inspector Steve Britton commented: "The scheme promotes a partnership approach by the local authority, licensees and police, in dealing with the problems associated with under-aged drinking. This culture has a huge impact on the health and development of our children and is often connected with crime and disorder issues, such as criminal damage and anti-social behaviour."
Parents at the school are being informed about the scheme and encouraged to support it. Local licensees have also been provided with an overview as to the effectiveness of the scheme during the recent seminar. They were urged to request the 'proof of age' card from any person they suspect to be under 18 years of age, either attempting to purchase alcohol or consuming it on their premises.
