Come to a preview of music to be performed in London; plus much more. Tenby Male Choir and the Greenhill School Concert and Jazz Bands and Choir will be performing in the De Valence Pavilion, Tenby, next Thursday, June 27, at 8 pm. Please join with us to wish the Ysgol Greenhill Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Quintet the best of luck when they compete in London on July 3.

This year, Greenhill music students are placing Tenby firmly on the map as a place for musical talent. Already the orchestra have won the competition for Orchestras and Bands at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Cardiff, held earlier this month. The orchestra, chamber orchestra and quintet are ready for competition in London at the National Festival of Music for Youth next month. They are very proud to be chosen after auditioning in March and look forward to competing with schools from all over Britain for the much coveted accolade as winners.

Some 112 students will travel to London for this annual festival held at the Royal Festival Hall, where they will perform works by Holst, Prokofiev, Sibelius, Beethoven and Jacob; challenging pieces indeed. Mr. Rapi, the conductor and head of Creative Arts, is delighted with their success so far and is hopeful that one of the groups will be a winner.

The students are dedicated and spend many hours rehearsing together. They benefit from the county team of peripatetic tutors who visit the school giving individual lessons. Some students have private tutors and all of this input combines to attain excellence. Pupils are of course ever supported financially and encouraged by their parents. These young people are certainly ambassadors for Tenby's talents and achievements.

Jamie Hutchinson is the leader of the orchestra and she has recently performed in St. David's Cathedral for the Festival. She was the 2001 Texaco Young Musician of Dyfed. Later this year she is to commence studies at the Royal Northern College, Manchester.

Louise Haines is principal clarinettist with the orchestra, Pembrokeshire County, Three Counties Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. She recently won the Rotary Young Musician competition at Brecon and the woodwind section at the Urdd Eisteddfod, Cardiff. She is to begin her further music studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London later this year.

Supporters of Greenhill Orchestra are very proud to be able to help such a worthy group of musicians and are very grateful for all the local support they receive, both financially and otherwise. They have been deliberating as to how they can raise a further £1,000 for transport. Therefore, they have organised the forthcoming concert in the De Valence Pavilion on Thursday, June 27, at 8 pm. Here it is hoped to raise the much-needed funds and we are very grateful to Tenby's Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, and the Town Council for providing the venue, when everyone will have the chance of a preview of the performances scheduled for the London stage. Tenby Male Choir will be making a guest appearance, always a pleasure to hear and they are no strangers to sharing the platform with Greenhillians. Also the school's Concert and Jazz Band will be giving renditions from their repertoires.

Why not come along and hear for yourselves the promise of a momentous performance in London, ably supported by the Male Choir and other students -a Royal Charter Musical Celebration. We chose this title as it was topical. This year, Tenby celebrates 600 years since King Henry IV granted a Charter to the Burgesses of Tenby so that they may elect a Mayor and two bailiffs each year. Also the Queen celebrates her Golden Jubilee.

Tickets are on sale, reasonably priced at £4 and £3 concessions, but hurry; on the door they will be £5 and £4 concessions. They are available from Creative Arts at school, Dales Music, Tenby and Tourist Information Centre, Kilgetty.
