Tenby and District Arts Club enjoyed the final item of their season's programme last Thursday at Greenhill School when the school orchestra performed the annual Arts Club Concert, all proceeds of the evening going to the orchestra funds. After an introduction and welcome by Newman Vincent, the concert began with the Chamber Orchestra, leader Jessica Ormonde, playing Handel's 'Entrance of the Queen of Sheba'. The spirit of the music was captured very well by the high quality of the strings and the two oboe soloists. This excellent beginning was followed by the full orchestra of over 100 players assembled before an expectant audience. Led by Matthew Birch and directed by Paul Rapi, the orchestra began with Mancini's 'Pink Panther' and followed by 'Satchmo', a selection of Louis Armstrong's well-known music. The brass section were outstanding here, with brilliant sounds and a real enjoyment of the music. The incidental music by John Williams from 'Hook!' came next, where every section of the orchestra had an opportunity to shine in the contrasting melodies, ranging from quietly reflective to brave and brash. The music from 'Star Trek Throughout the Years' presented quite a challenge, especially to the brass and percussion sections, which the players dealt with admirably. 'Pirates of the Caribbean' by Badelt produced some spirited playing from the whole orchestra, with every group being fully involved. To finish a lively and thoroughly enjoyable programme, the audience heard the tricky rhythms, syncopation and mood changes in the music of 'Chicago' where every member of the orchestra met the challenge with skill and confidence. With their hard word and dedication, these talented students gave a splendid evening and the club is most grateful to them and to their director of music, Paul Rapi. Members wish them every success in future events and especially on their trip to Tuscany in July. This (Friday) evening, the AGM takes place at 8 pm at the Tenby Community Learning Centre. Members are urged to attend if at all possible.
