Gravells Motors in Narberth hosted a successful young persons’ driving and road safety event called ‘Initiative 15’ which aimed to show aspiring and new drivers how to stay safe on the roads.
Young people and parents from across Pembrokeshire were able to have driving lesson tasters with qualified driving instructors and talk about car maintenance with Gravells mechanics.
The fire service were on hand with two driving simulators which showed young people the dangers of distractions in the vehicle and police officers discussed driving offences and legal issues.
Pembrokeshire County Council’s road safety team gave drink driving advice and the ambulance service showed equipment they use at road traffic collisions.
Aimed towards young people aged 15 and over, the event ended with an extrication demonstration by Narberth Fire Crew.
The evening was the brainchild of Ian Gravell, director of Gravells Motors, which sponsored the evening.
Ian said: “It covered all sorts of topics, from how to look after your car properly to the effects of alcohol on your driving ability, and what happens if you drive and text.
“It was a superb event - everyone who came really enjoyed it and took a lot away from it. In fact, the feedback was so good that we will be organising a follow-up event in six months’ time.”
Kirstie-Anne Donoghue, road safety officer for Pembrokeshire County Council, thanked Gravells for hosting the event and said it was a valuable initiative.
“The young people who came were given a range of excellent practical advice from the different organisations, which will no doubt prove beneficial to them,” she said. “Many were also advised to consider taking a ‘Pass Plus Cymru’ driving course after they pass their test to gain additional driving experience and skills.”
