The first meeting of the Narberth Grassland Society, a daytime meeting, was held recently at Clerkenhill Farm. The farm visit started with a brief introduction from the chairman of the society, Richard Lewis, who was the host for the day. It was evident that the dry summer had had a big effect on the management of the farm, although grass was plentiful on the day of the visit. July and August had been very testing months. A large amount of fodder rape had been grown with the intention that it would extend winter grazing. Sixty acres of third cut silage had recently been cut and with this Richard felt confident that there would be enough fodder to see him through to next spring. The walk ended back at the farm park, where 16,000 visitors have come through the farm this year. This had become a very important part of the farm business and ongoing investments were being made. A short meeting was held at the tea shop, where Richard congratulated the winners of the recent competitions, namely: grass management - Bill Ridge, Vaynor Farm; permanent pasture - Hugh James, Langdon Mill Farm; maize - Philip Lewis, Poyerston Farm. Owain Martin raised the point that in 2012 the society will have been formed for 50 years and it would be nice to host the BGS Summer Visit in Pembrokeshire. This will be discussed at the next meeting. A vote of thanks was given by Richard Jones, Hackett Farm, who thanked Richard and Dawn for hosting a very enjoyable meeting. The next meeting will be on Monday, November 13, at the Plas Hyfryd, Narberth, at 8 pm. The speaker will be Sarah Miller (Radio Pembrokeshire) on the subject 'My life as store manager and buyer for Tesco and Safeway'.
