This was supposed to be an end-of-season tour, but with four matches still to play (due to postponements etc) it came as a welcome rest from the pressures of league football.

A party of 18 - 14 players and four baby sitters - set out from Tenby on Friday morning to tour the West Country. And tour they did! After eventually reaching their five-star accommodation, they unpacked and set out to survey the local amenities. Three Chinese restaurants, two Indians and an Italian restaurant later, the boys returned, well fed.

On Saturday morning they played Gordano Valley Giants, who were formed about 10 years ago by ex-Tenbyite, Chris Flavin. Both sides started cautiously, trying to come to terms with the hard ground and sweltering heat, but Tenby drew first blood when a delightful pass by Bruce Tasker found Jack Christopher, who turned his defender before firing low into the left-hand corner.

The second goal was claimed by Liam Robson, who reacted quickest inside the box following a defensive mix-up, and the third was scored by captain Darren Taylor, who rose majestically to head home a Perry Broadhurst corner.

Sonny Phillips grabbed the fourth when he was left unmarked at the far post.

The Giants did pull one back before the break and had it not been for the heroics of Lewis Hurlow, between the Tenby sticks, the score would have been a lot closer.

Both sides used roll-on, roll-off substitutes to enable everyone to have an equal part in the match and this saw Tenby field some unusual combinations.

The only score of the second half was from the Giants as both sides played a tight and sometimes heated last 30 minutes.

Following Portishead's after-match hospitality, it was a mad dash to Ashton Gate, via Clifton Suspension Bridge, to watch Bristol City against Mansfield.

That night David Otton was crowned pillow dance champion, Jac Worley won the prize for finding the toothpaste and everyone sang the baked bean song from Blazing Saddles. It was an excellent tour where all the boys behaved impeccably and displayed the quality of football that, hopefully, will give Pembrokeshire more recognition.
