Tuesday's Mart at Whitland saw 48 good quality beef calves selling to a top price of £160 for a Belgian Blue from Picton-Davies, Asgood Farm, St. Clears, who also sold a Simmental bull at £148. D. Scourfield, Windberry Top Farm, Begelly, sold a Belgian Blue bull at £150, with Morris, Parcummin, Llanddowror, taking £138 for a Lim and A. Tremellen, Tremoilet Farm, Pendine, £130 for a Charolais. Heifer calves sold to £100 for a Charolais from A. Tremellen, with other leading prices including £90 for a Simmental from Woolley, Pencraig Isaf, Cwmbach, £88 for a Belgian Blue from D. Scourfield and £80 for a Simmental from Morris, Blaenffynhonau, Llangynin. Friesian bulls sold to a top price of £26 and averaged just over £10 per head. The 437 lambs entered again met a more selective trade, although good quality medium weight Farm Assured lambs remained in demand. Top price was 112p for 40 kilo lambs from A. Davies, Morfa Farm, Mathry, who also sold others around the 40 kilo mark at 111.6p/kg and 111p/kg and a pen of 25 kilo lambs from James, Godredewi, Penybont, realised 111.2p/kg. Top price per head was £50 for 49 kilo lambs from Morgan, Fenton Home Farm, Crundale, and the overall average was 104.13p/kg. Non Approved lambs sold to a top price of £35 and averaged £30.50. A large entry of 360 cull ewes sold to a similar trade to the previous week, with ewes making a top price of £50 from Gilfach Farms Ltd, Lampeter Velfrey, with heavy ewes averaging £38.50 and lighter types £18.50. Included in the Store cattle entries at Whitland Mart tomorrow (Saturday) will be 16 Continental cross suckler cows with their Spring born Simmental calves, two in-calf cows and a pedigree Simmental bull from Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Harries, Bank Farm, Cosheston, who are retiring. Mr. and Mrs. Harries' sheep flock and range of farm implements will be auctioned on the farm, on Monday, September 5. The British Charollais Sheep Society Show and Sale - all from MV accredited flocks -will be included in the fortnightly Sheep Sale at Whitland Mart on Friday, August 26. Forty Friesian Bulling Heifers (10-24 months) have been entered for the Whitland Store Mart on Saturday, September 3. The latest report from Haverfordwest Mart indicates that the 60 store cattle forward averaged £325, with a top price for steers being £520 for an Aberdeen Angus steer and a bunch of eight Hereford crosses from Davies, Bryncoed, Velindre, Crymych, who also sold the top price heifer at £480 for a Charolais cross in his consignment of 29 entered. The total entry of 89 calves averaged £27, with a top price Limousin bull from Williams, Penisardre, Letterston, selling at £130, and heading the heifer entries was a Belgian Blue heifer from T.
