Sir,

On March 2, in Neath, one of Pembrokeshire's best known sportsmen, Scott Gammer, defends his British heavyweight boxing title against Danny Williams, recently destroyed by Audley Harrison. It is ironic that, as I'm writing this, the same Audley was himself destroyed by Michael Sprott.

I say Pembrokeshire, because outside of our great county, even in Wales, especially those whose interest in boxing is not that great, very few people have heard of Scott.

Scott has a great chance to put this matter straight when he fights Williams (surely with a name like Williams he has some Welsh connection). Be assertive Scott, don't get involved in the brawls that Danny Williams will obviously try to involve you in. You are a much better boxer than he is. Winning on points is better than getting involved in an ugly brawl which is strength-sapping.

It was quite upsetting to hear them all talking about last night's fight, Barry McGuigan, Harrison, Sprott and a few others; sadly the British champion was never mentioned in the equation.

Years ago, the British heavyweight champion was known by everyone in Britain, whether they liked boxing or not. Cooper, Erskine, London, Billy Walker, Prescott, Dick Richardson, were all household names.

We have to make it known, through the likes of the tourist board, that in Pembrokeshire we have the present British champion; also through the media and through Scott and his management themselves. Muhammad Ali was a great exponent of this and he didn't do bad, did he. Scott's image must be enhanced, to make sure everyone knows about him. As one who has refereed Scott many times over the years in club shows, Welsh championships and internationals, he is only a couple of wins off the coveted Lonsdale Belt that many cherish, but only a few actually get to own. Beat Williams and the next defence is for the belt.

Scott, may I wish you all the best. I've seen the Welsh vest on you, now I want to see the belt. Good luck.
