The whole community can always be relied upon to give their full support to the Clynderwen and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show and last Saturday was no exception. Held at Parcyllwyn fields - an ideal venue generously made available for several years by Mrs. Sheila Williams, Tyhen - the event again attracted very good entries throughout and a gate that was considered to be well up. Still essentially a Young Farmers Club event, it was previous generations who started the idea as a Calf Show around 70 years ago and, although there have been periods, for a variety of reasons, when the show was not held it remains as strong today as it has ever been. As with so many other similar attractions, the horse and pony classes now predominate and supreme was given to Bethan Simon on her five-year-old bay Mountain and Moorland winner, the Cob Powys Valley Tobago. Bethan's sister, Marged, also scored a success with the Section A pony, Gweundir Dafydd and the winning Show Hunter Pony was Karen Fenrich's chestnut gelding, Osmotherly Picasso, superbly ridden by her daughter, Danielle. Heading the dairy cattle entries were regular supporters, Simon and Sian Davies, with the 14- month-old Holstein maiden heifer, Castellhyfryd Champion Rose derived as an embryo transplant from their highly acclaimed Brynhyfryd Raider Rose. In reserve was another Holstein, Dick and Rachael James's well bred Maplerose James Barb. Best from the commercial beef steer entries was given to David, Ruth and Andrew Phillips. Competition is always exceptionally keen in the sheep classes and here again the overall prize was given to a local breeder, Russell Davies, with a ewe from the renowned Merydd pedigree Welsh Mountain flock. Stephen James, chairman, expressed his appreciation to all officials, including the joint presidents, Ton and Barbara Pegg, all judges and stewards and everyone who had contributed in any way to the continued success of the show.
