The annual Caradoc James Memorial Fund for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) Pitch and Putt golf tournament will take place at Heatherton Country Sports Park on September 9.

Raising funds to help screen children and young adults in school in Tenby for heart defects, the tournament, held at Heatherton by kind permission of the management, will run from 10 am to 3 pm.

There are classes for juniors (nine holes), professionals, novices, veterans and ladies (18 holes), and there will be cups or trophies for all the winners.

The presentation of prizes will take place later that evening at the Pig and Puffin, The Norton, Tenby, from 8 pm.

"The pitch and putt tournament is our main fund-raising event during the year," explained Mrs. Maureen Ward, of the Caradoc James Memorial Fund.

"Hopefully, if enough money is raised, we will be able to bring the mobile screening unit and technicians to Tenby in January," continued Mrs. Ward. "Screening is vital as it provides early detection of heart problems in children and young adults, problems which are often causes of what they term Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS).

"The last mobile unit was brought to Tenby Leisure Centre in 1996, when four people were detected as having problems. As a result of this early detection, these problems are now being successfully treated."

Mrs. Ward went on: "Professor W. McKenna and Professor Muir from St. George's Hospital, Edinburgh, are researching the figures for SADS, as they believe the figures are much higher than originally forecast.

"We hope these figures will convince the Government to introduce a screening programme for all young adults in schools like they do in other European countries.

"Until then, however, fund-raising is vital to help finance these volunteer screening visits, so we would ask people to please support our event."

Cost to enter the tournament is £5 per person and further information is available from Mrs. Ward on (01834) 843712.

Anyone wishing to sponsor a hole (£10) at the tournament is asked to contact Miss Lis James on (01834) 843712.
