Representatives of three local children’s charities visited Pembroke Refinery recently to each receive major donations from Valero Energy Ltd, following the company’s third annual Benefit for Children Golf Classic tournament.

This year’s event was held at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport on June 9 and 10, with 176 golfers playing on the famous Twenty Ten and Montgomerie courses. Players were also treated to an evening gala dinner, with guest speaker, BBC presenter Naga Munchetty.

With donations raised from numerous company sponsors, including main sponsor Nalco Champion, the overall total collected for the various charities was an astounding £136,000. The proceeds were shared by two charities chosen by the refinery - SNAP Pembrokeshire and the Pembrokeshire Autism Friendly Youth Club - and two chosen by Valero’s London office - Richard House and Community Links, with a fifth charity - LATCH, the Welsh children’s cancer charity - chosen by Nalco Champion.

Following a presentation at the refinery with all the Welsh charities with a cheque for £27,200, Valero Refinery public affairs manager, Stephen Thornton, said: “The third annual Valero Benefit for Children Golf Classic is now a firmly established event in the company’s charitable calendar, and we are delighted that these incredibly deserving organisations that do so much for children in our communities have been able to benefit once again from the generosity on display at this year’s event.”
