Pupils from Golden Grove School had a real treat in store when local representatives of National Breakfast Week came to the school.

The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the wealth of wonderful breakfast produce available around the country.

Through a series of interactive quiz sessions, the pupils were guided through the process of what makes a good and healthy breakfast.

Tables of wholesome food were laid out in the classrooms with pupils taking it in turns to try some of the foods on offer. Weetabix was a clear favourite, especially when combined with some dried fruit.

Class teacher Mrs. Lewis said: "We have a very strong ethos in school of healthy eating and encourage pupils to think about their food options. The National Breakfast Week supports the work we do throughout the year to encourage pupils to eat and live healthily."

Key messages from the staff delivering the classroom based sessions are:

Breakfast benefits you and your family and can help make you healthier and happier.

Breakfast provides you with the energy and nutrients needed for an active lifestyle.

Elsewhere in the school, other classes were being educated on the dangers involved with fire and the essentials of what to do in the event of a fire being discovered.

Lee Simmons from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service used a series of story boards and a story to tease out the children's knowledge of the dangers of fires and actions to take. Choruses of 'dial 999' could be heard emanating from the classes visited by fire officer Simmons.

Headteacher Les Johnson said: "We are most grateful to the fire service for all the hard work they do, Officer Simmons is well-respected in the school and his sessions are always fun with a serious message."
