Pupils from Class 4 of Golden Grove-Gelli Aur have been learning all about the sources of the food that we eat. Tesco in Pembroke Dock was the venue for a fun and fact-filled session following the company's 'Farm to Fork Project. The first port of call was the kitting up room which has been created in one of the store foyers. Over-aprons, white hat and a clipboard were given out together with a pencil and resource sheets. The store bakery was the next place visited. It was here that the pupils were treated to a hand on experience of mixing the ingredients to make dough. Each pupils was then given a ball of dough from which they made bread hedgehogs, butterflies, fish and other creatures. After proving the bread, the pupils were able to see their bread go in to the oven for baking. Leaving the bakery, they went food spotting in the fruit and veg section. From their work sheets, they identified and recorded the various items on display, noting carefully where the product had come from. A short break was had by the deli counter where they pupils were able to taste a wide range of fruits and cheeses. Pineapple and grapes were firm favourites in the fruit with cheddar and apricot cheese winning against others on offer. Moving on, the pupils were shown various types of seafood, including a bag of mussels. Fish were handled and inspected with the pupils noting the tip of looking for a bright eye in whole fish as a sign of freshness. No time to chill on this visit! ....well yes there was because the next stop was in the warehouse and the food fridge, if that was not cold enough they moved on to the freezer where they spent a couple of minutes (in some cases) before coming back in to the store to collect their, now cooked, bread. An amazing experience and one very much appreciated by all the pupils and staff who gave the visit a huge thumbs up. Our return trip to Golden Grove School was accompanied by the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread. Headteacher Les Johnson said of the visit: "I would like to thank Tesco for taking time to introduce our pupils to the Farm to Fork Project, I tasted some of the delicious bread, very good it was too." The visit has been followed up with classroom-based activities around food and where it is sourced from.
