Last Sunday, at Clarbeston Road AFC, saw the conclusion to the Women's League football programme with a superb Cup Final between Goodwick and Tenby.
With both teams able to field their best sides, this promised to be an epic struggle, and so it proved.
Tenby opened slightly the brighter, with good attacking play by midfielders Annie Davies and Michaela Bevan giving Goodwick defenders Anne Evans and Sharon Rodgers plenty to do.
Tenby opened the scoring when after a goalmouth scramble the ball came back off the bar, allowing Denise Powell to head past the 'keeper.
Goodwick immediately fought back, with Amanda John and Anji Tinley causing plenty of problems to the Tenby defensive spine of Imelde Rossi and Carrie Slack.
The equaliser came in the form of a lobbed shot from Lowri Jones, which beat the Tenby custodian, Ali Brace.
Goodwick were spurred on by this and continued to apply pressure to the Tenby defence. Amanda John, who put in an excellent performance throughout the game, further increased Goodwick's lead with a dribble in the left-hand corner of the box and a low shot into the far corner of the net.
Tenby came straight back at Goodwick with a goal scored directly from a corner kick. Nicola Aston, who had had a terrific battle in midfield all afternoon with opposite number Emma Rowell, took the kick. The ball was delivered with precision to the far post and beat the Goodwick 'keeper to equalise the game at the end of the half.
The second half started at the same pace the first had ended, with everyone giving their all in what was turning out to be a very exciting game for the large crowd that had turned out.
Goodwick regained the lead with another well-taken goal from Amanda John, and everyone waited to see what the Tenby response would be.
With a race against Goodwick defender Sharon Rodgers, Tenby centre forward Selina Morgan just managed to get a toe on the end of a through pass to put her side level again.
This was a really good goal, but rough justice on Sharon, who had had a superb game throughout.
Extra-time started in exactly the same way as before, with both teams creating chances, but with the golden goal rule applying, both supporters (and coaches) were biting their nails at each effort to score.
It was the sort of game where neither team deserved to lose, but there had to be a winner, and it came from Tenby. Again Selina Morgan used her speed and stamina to keep going after another through pass to score low in the net, much to the delight of the Tenby supporters.
This was an excellent advert for the Pembrokeshire women's game, and they now look forward to the new Girls and Women's Seven-a-Side Summer League, which is due to start on Sunday, May 16, at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre.
FOOTNOTE: This was the first time in the history of Tenby Ladies that they have won a major trophy and their third success this season, having already won two indoor league titles.
