Congratulations go out to Peter and Mary Smith, a local couple, well-known to all in Tenby, who celebrate their golden wedding anniversary tomorrow (Saturday).
This popular and much-respected couple were married in St. Georges Church, Tanglin, Singapore, on October 3, 1959. The wedding reception was held in the WOs and Sgts Mess, Singapore Guard Regiment, followed by a romantic honeymoon in Malacca.
Only daughter of Joseph and Winnifed Davies, Mary was born and raised in Tenby and spent a happy and memorable childhood with her parents and brother, Victor, living in 1 Avondale Villas, St. Julian Street.
Whilst Peter was stationed in Pembrokeshire with the REME, he first met Mary at one of the local dances in the De Valence. Peter was posted to Singapore and Mary flew out to marry her fiancé. Following their marriage, Peter and Mary spent many happy and memorable years in Singapore.
Further postings took the couple to Germany and SE England, including Colchester, Tidworth, Aldershot and Gillingham. Peter retired from the Army and the family returned to Tenby in 1976, moving into No 2 Avondale Villas.
Prior to his recent retirement, Peter was employed by the MOD, firstly in Pendine and then Cardiff. Mary can relate many a story about the happy times she spent whilst employed by Monica Shuttleworth in the shoe store in Upper Frog Street, and latterly with Thomas Footwear in Haverfordwest, before becoming a lady of leisure.
This popular couple continue to play an active part in the local community. They regularly attend St. Mary's Chursh, are members of the St. Mary's Handbell Ringers, and continuously raise money for a whole host of charities.
The couple have two sons, Ian, who lives with his wife Wanda, in Haytor Gardens, Tenby, and Stephen, who lives with his partner Nicola, in Cardiff. They have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and are loved very much.
Mary and Peter are currently celebrating their special day in Malta, with family celebrations upon their return.
