Celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary today (Friday) are Hugh and Joan Beynon, of Parklands, 2 Ash Park, Kilgetty.
Born and bred in the village, Hugh met Joan, who hails from Poole in Dorset, through a mutual friend, when he was working in a colliery in Seven Sisters, and Joan was stationed as a lieutenant in the Salvation Army.
After something of a whirlwind romance, they were married several months later on July 5, 1952, at St. Johns Church, Parklands, Poole, and after a honeymoon spent touring Dorset, they set up home in Seven Sisters.
Two years later, they moved back to Pembrokeshire and over the years they have become well-known figures in the local community.
For 16 years the couple were steward and stewardess at the Sports Club in Kilgetty, which Hugh helped to build.
Hugh and Joan have three children, daughter Heather, who lives with her husband Iwan (Yogi) in Kilgetty, son Billy, who resides in Tenby with his wife Ann, and daughter Rose and her husband Graham, who also live in Kilgetty.
They also have three grandchildren, Teresa, Samantha and Matthew, who celebrated his fifth birthday earlier this week.
Indeed, it is turning out to be a week of celebrations for the family, as Hugh and Joan will be marking their special anniversary with a party for family and friends at the RAOB Club.
A member of St. Mary's Church, Begelly, Joan has many hobbies, including handbell ringing, decoupage and playing darts for the Sports Club ladies team, while Hugh enjoys music and supporting the local sports teams.
When asked for their recipe for a successful marriage, Joan and Hugh felt it was a "little bit of give and take" and "keeping busy" that has contributed to their 50 happy years.
