Sir,

Although, as many of the letters and messages from competitors and supporters alike could not say enough regarding the spectacular day in which some of the most physically fit athletes tested themselves to the limit, I was utterly gobsmacked to see a handful of negative letters printed the week after.

With regards to costs and the 'many businesses saw little or no custom', may I remind you that the roads were closed for one day, while the competitors, their families and the supporters from clubs and individuals stayed for the days prior and following the wonderful event. One local Saundersfoot business, as well as other businesses, had substantially increased takings the day after the Sunday, with the mass amount of people still in the area.

Also, in answer to our rather discontented guests from the Midlands, the map of the route was posted on the Ironman Wales website, as well as numerous road signs being placed on the main routes several weeks in advance in order to allow plenty of time and as little hassle as possible to those travelling on the one day. All that was changed was the route of the swim due to safety reasons

Most importantly, which seems to have been missed altogether by such negativity, is that our beautiful county was shown to athletes and supporters from over 40 countries around the world. Our nationally acclaimed part of the world will now spread to international acclaim and hopefully bring more and more visitors each year to witness an incredible event in a spectacular county, which has done us all very proud and will hopefully stay for many years to come.

Sam Baker,

Rushy Lake,

Saundersfoot.
