The second episode of new BBC?series ‘Go Fish!’ with Will Millard will see the fishing fanatic head to Pembrokeshire.
The new series sees Will embark on a quest to catch some of Wales’ most iconic fish and the second episode focuses on the world of shark fishing in the Celtic Deep.
Home to up to 40 shark species, Welsh waters are a hotspot for big specimens and Will is looking to looking to land one.
He also delves deep into the ethics of the sport and finds out more about the measures being taken to preserve the shark population.
His journey will take him to Milford Haven (where he catches a blue shark), Porthmadog and Anglesey where he searches for one of the rarest sharks in the world that resides off the coast of Wales, the angel shark.
He will meet an array of anglers to experience what it’s like to catch the ultimate underwater predator, as well as the conservationists who are working with local fishing communities to monitor them.
Speaking about the series, Will said: “With its rugged coastline, wild rivers and mountain lakes, Wales is an angler’s paradise so I’m heading out, rod in hand, to explore the hidden depths of our country and its people, as well as fulfilling a lifelong passion to catch some of the most iconic fish in Wales.
“I want to meet the people who treasure these waters, hear their stories and make some friends for life.
“Most people don’t realise what’s beneath our oceans, but the coast of Wales is a paradise for marine life with crystal clear waters full of surprising creatures.
There are up to 40 shark species visiting Welsh waters, including one of the rarest in the world, which has mysteriously returned to our ocean.
“The unprecedented heatwave of last summer put the potential for warmer weather species to head into our country right back in the news. Chief among those were sharks; everything from rumours of Great Whites spotted from fishing boats, to Blue Sharks cropping up right in our shallow harbours; but the truth is, here in Wales, we have always lived cheek-by-jowl with this ancient and much-misunderstood species.
“In this journey I headed to the rich waters around the island of Anglesey, the shark mecca of Milford Haven, and the mega-marine superhighway the ‘Celtic Deeps’ in an attempt to catch the biggest predator of my life.
“When it eventually came, the power of the take was absolutely jaw dropping, the first blue shark I have ever landed was like being attached to a runaway freight train, but more than that, I also learnt about the vital role anglers can play in saving this species for future generations,” he added.
The episode will air tonight (Friday) on BBC One Wales at 7.30 pm and will be available on the BBC iPlayer.
