What a cracking day for the opening Seniors match against Glynhir. This bunch of lads from Glynhir are such good friends it almost, almost, seems such a shame to beat them here at home.

The Tenby team were resplendent in their new 'sunshine yellow' shirts, and so proud of them that we even put up with all the 'daffodil' jokes - and they were from the ladies no less! In fact, if any of us stopped still too long in taking relief, there was a danger that one of the greenkeepers would come along with weed-killer, thinking we were dandelions!

But, Tenby Seniors captain J. D. R. Williams got the proceedings off to a super start with Mike Nesbitt-Hawes, against Glynhir captain Ron Lewis and Derek Locke. This opening captain's match saw some pretty impressive game play, and they shook hands on the 14th for an early shower. J. D. R. looked pretty pleased with himself.

So did Vince Shaw and long-time partner John Hancock as they went immediately four up against Bill Lewis and Randall Killa. It was looking like a bit of a walkover, but all of a sudden, Bill and Randall found their form and reduced the deficit to two. We would like to think that it was a lack of concentration on our part, but nevertheless, they made us think for a few holes and of course that is dangerous. But we managed to hold our nerve, and a nice three on the 17th closed the game down to a 3 and 1 win.

Roy Gundry and Coelin Griffith were the next pairing to record a win. Mind you, it was a wonder that Roy could get his trolley moving, what with the pockets of the bag being filled with medical accoutrements. Coelin was quite happy to sample the red after their 3 and 2 win over Dave Trussler and Colin Hopkins.

Tony Morris and Des Stone, and Ken Fletcher with David Morgan recorded the next two wins, and Ken was in first gear, as he was only one over on the front nine, then missed a couple of simple putts that made him a little disappointed to say the least.

The pairing of Malcolm Arlott and Bob Harries completely wiped out Brian Gingell and Peter Bourne by the massive margin of 7 and 6 no less! What are you boys on?

Almost as convincing were Bob Storey and Ken Gouldsbrough, as they also did a demolition job on Hugh Sellick and Ivor Simpkin by 6 and 4.

Barry Frayne and Newman Vincent were very steady in their game with Lincoln Parry and Jeff Sumner, and yet another partnership seems to have been born, as they both complemented each other nicely for a 4 and 2 win.

The A team, Roy Morgan and Clifton John, just scraped in over Winston Davies and Markham Jones, with the final pairing of Jim Taylor and Owen Monaghan, having a convincing win over John Balmont and Paul Murphy. Owen's performance prompted the visitors to comment that his handicap should be carefully looked at, as he parred the last five holes of their game. This match completed the full house against Glynhir, a feat that doesn't seem to have been done before. But we tremble at the return match later on in the year!

After a nice match meal, captain J. D. R. welcomed Ron Lewis and his, by now quite merry men, and mentioned Ron's birdie on the seventh. One that Ron will probably remember for a long time to come. He thanked stewards Mac and Fay and helper Linda for the meal. Ron Lewis replied on behalf of Glynhir and thanked J. D. R. for the great welcome given. He also managed a decent joke and thanked his own side for their great support.

Finally, Bill Lewis was invited to do his party pieces, and he had a very willing audience for his own brand of humour. No wonder we like Glynhir, and we look forward to our return match with you.
