Pembrokeshire's army of cooks and gardeners who sell only the best home-made goods and produce through the Country Markets network are getting more professional in their approach to business. A glossy leaflet, which flags up the co-operative's work and informs the public just when and where each Pembrokeshire market is held, has been launched.
The leaflet has been developed as part of a programme of activities supported by PLANED through its European-funded LEADER+ programme. Ella Ferguson, Country Markets' market advisor in Pembrokeshire, says the leaflet will help raise the profile of the organisation.
"A lot of people still don't know we exist,' said Mrs. Ferguson, who sells her cakes at the Saundersfoot Country Market. "This leaflet will help people to understand what the markets do and how they can use them on a regular basis.'
Jane Howells, PLANED's LEADER+ co-ordinator, said PLANED had given its support to this project because it fulfilled all the criteria of community entrepreneurship.
"Country Markets are an excellent opportunity for local people and visitors to buy the best local produce and they clearly are a means of plugging the leaks in the local economy,' she said. The philosophy behind Country Markets was invented by the Women's Institute movement to sustain traditional crafts and the country way of life.
It now has 450 markets nationwide, including 10 in Pembrokeshire.
Helen Cecil, who is manager of the St. David's Country Market, began producing for the markets when her children were young. It meant she could work from home which gave her flexibility. "I am a trained chef and I love cooking so this was an opportunity to make a living from home,' she said.
