ST. JOHNS CHURCH

The presiding minister on Sunday, the Rev. Chris Tolley, told us that the theme of his message was to be love.

After the prayers, all joined together in the morning's opening hymn.

Susanne Tolley then read from John, chapter 4, verses 7-16, and Luke, chapter 6, verses 27-38, both of which readings reinforced Chris's message of love.

Chris said that quite often he guided people in the readings they chose for weddings and funerals and the need to talk about love.

All Christians are different in the way in which they conceive love and he told us of a man he encountered when he was working in London. This man was giving out religious tracts and stopped Chris to ask him if he was a Christian, but when Chris said that he went to a CofE church, he said that this was not Christian.

Chris said that he was sure he was quite sincere in his beliefs, but that was not the love which Jesus preached. Jesus said that the most important thing in life is love and that is what this man was not showing.

Jesus showed love in everything he did through his life ending in the supreme sacrifice of his life on the cross.

At the Last Supper, he gave the commandment to love one another. Mercy is the best way of showing your love of people, not haranguing them.

Holy Communion served by the elders followed and the blessing was given after the last hymn.

Thank you Chris for your lovely message and thanks go to all who took part in the service.

This Sunday's service at 11 am will be conducted by Mr. Mick Quirk and all are welcome.

In a quiet week, the only activity is the coffee morning on Wednesday.

Baptist Church

The morning worship service on Sunday was led by Mr. Gerald Duffett. Mrs. Ann Pattenden chose the hymns and was the pianist.

Guest preacher was Pastor David Taylor from Broadhaven, who chose his reading from Scripture, chapter 10 of Acts of the Apostles. This records how the gospel was first received by a Gentile; previously the gospel had only been understood by Jews. David compared the different backgrounds of the Apostle Peter, a Jew, with that of Cornelius, a Gentile. God prepared the hearts of both men and when they met, Cornelius believed in Jesus and Peter understood that all nationalities could become Christians. Christians today need to rethink as to how to present their faith to the present generation.

The morning concluded with the communion service.

Bible study and prayer meeting will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2.30 pm in the school hall.

STEPS2HEALTH

Wet and windy weather conditions were on offer for the 21 members of the Steps2Health group who travelled to Carew on Saturday.

It was just once around the Millpond before the faster group, led by Paul and Peter, ascended Carew Newton past the playing fields and quarry while others walked or drove up the lane with leaders Val, Janice and Brian.

Destination was the 'Carew Newton Coffee Shop' where refreshments were kindly provided by Julie, Betty and Dave. Everyone enjoyed the homemade biscuits and Welsh cakes and £53 was raised for Ty Hafan. Many thanks to the kind hosts for their hospitality.

Dave also told the group that the water had been over the bridge at high tide, but it had gone down before the walk.

Tomorrow (Saturday) meet 10.30 for a local walk.
