st. johns church

The service for Pentecost was conducted by St. Johns Worship Group, led by Mrs. Eleanor Sevenoaks.

The choir opened the service by singing 'O Holy Spirit', followed by Lara reading the young people's welcome.

The congregation sang 'Breathe on me breath of God' and then Connor Bridges read from Acts, chapter 2, verses 1-21.

Eleanor introduced the first Images of the Spirit which were cities, illustrated by bubbles, and mountains, by fire, all shown with pictures on the screen and with the help of some of the junior church. The readings which followed were from Romans, chapter 8, verses 22-27, John, chapter 15, verses 36-37 and chapter 16, verses 4-15, and were presented by Gary Davis.

Molly and Lara, of the junior church, introduced the hymn 'Be still for the presence of the Lord' by playing the music on their violins. Then prayers of thanksgiving were led by Mollie Neate.

Eleanor followed this by introducing the second Images of the Spirit. She spoke about the reading from John, in which he was talking to a great crowd, and of which 3,000 were baptised that day. Jesus had told the disciples that from the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit would lead and help them. It was amazing how a small number of His followers built a worldwide faith.

After prayers led by Mollie Neate, the junior church singing group sang 'We want to see Jesus lifted high'. The grace was said and then the congregation sang 'We are marching in the Light of God' while the children progressed round the church.

Many thanks go to the worship group and particularly to the junior church for their part in the service.

This Sunday's service will be at 11 am and will be conducted by the Rev. Peter Noble, URC moderator. All are welcome.

Deer Park

Baptist Church

Pentecost Sunday was celebrated in glorious fine weather.

Worshippers were welcomed by Mrs. Jeanne Grimes. Miss Helen Hills introduced the service with a reading from Acts, Chapter 2, which recounts the story as to what happened on the first Pentecost, with the coming of the Holy Spirit on the church.

The music group accompanied the worship. Situations both locally and worldwide were items mentioned during the open prayer time.

The preacher was Mr. Michael Jones, who continued reading from Acts, Chapter 2, and based his message on reminding us of some of the basic foundations of the nature and role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian.

There will be Bible study on Tuesday, and Parent Toddlers will meet on Thursday as usual.

steps2health walk

A large band of Steps2Health walkers had the opportunity to discover the hidden delights that abound between New Hedges and Saundersfoot, as walks leader Janice Tooth took them on an intriguing route that led into the heart of the countryside (writes B.S.).

The weather on Saturday could not have been more perfect, so no surprise that so many gathered at New Hedges for the start of the hour-long walk. The roar of the traffic was soon replaced by birdsong as we cut through Saundersfoot Bay Leisure Park . Once past the colourful azalea bushes, it was into the shady woodlands.

But for the watchful eyes of walks leaders Barbara, Val, Margaret, Gill, Penny and Lyn, it may well have been a Babes in the Wood scenario as our route twisted and turned in all sorts of surprising directions until we came to the lane leading to Swallowtree Gardens. Now we could pause to enjoy the magnificent views across the bay to Pendine and beyond.

Picking up the coast path, we encountered quite muddy conditions, but thanks to the helping hands of walks leaders everyone negotiated even the trickiest parts.

As the tide was in, we had to walk up The Glen to access Saundersfoot, where we found the holiday scene in full swing, with a crowded beach, full car parks and busy shops.

Plenty of places to enjoy coffee or catch up with some shopping.

Tomorrow (Saturday) we hope for more such weather so we may enjoy views of the Preselis from Llys-y-Fran.

To find out if there are any seats still available on the minibus leaving Tenby at 10 am, ring Val Coates-Rees 843951. Drivers meet approx. 11 am Llys-y-Fran car park.
