History could be created at Cresselly on Bank Holiday Monday, May 28, next season, if Glamorgan play their first official fixture in Pembrokeshire at the picturesque Cresselly ground.

Cresselly is one of the 'out grounds' being considered for a plumb fixture against Surrey in the ECB Trophy whilst the Sophia Gardens ground at Cardiff is being redeveloped for one of the Ashes Test matches against Australia in 2009.

Next season the Cardiff ground will be used predominantly for Twenty:20 floodlight matches, with most of Glamorgan's home fixtures in other competitions being played at venues such as Swansea, Colwyn Bay, Abergavenny, Ebbw Vale and Neath or other grounds which were used as First Class grounds prior to Sophia Gardens becoming Glamorgan's permanent base.

Glamorgan chief executive Mike Fatkin visited the Cresselly ground recently, with cricket secretary Caryl Watkin and head groundsman Len Smith, to discuss the possibility of a fixture with Cresselly club officials.

If the fixture does go ahead, Glamorgan will require certain guarantees from the Cresselly club and negotiations would also have to take place with the County Club to avoid a Pembrokeshire league fixture being scheduled for the same date.

Normally Cresselly first or second team players would be in action on the Bank Holiday Monday in a Division One or Division Three league match. If Glamorgan do come to Cresselly, it will be a day after another home fixture against Essex in the same competition and a Liverpool Victoria County Championship match at home to Essex which will start on Wednesday, May 30.

Glamorgan have played at the Cresselly ground twice in recent years in benefit matches. On Sunday, July 4, 2004, the fixture was for the Sophia Gardens Ground Development Appeal and local cricketers are still talking about Matthew Maynard's brilliant century in that match, which included a reverse sweep for six over 'The Mound' and into the adjoining field.

Earlier this season, on Sunday July 2, Cresselly was chosen by all-rounder Darren Thomas for one of his benefit matches.

It is understood that Glamorgan players and officials were impressed with the ground, the organisation of the Cresselly club and the general enthusiasm for cricket in Pembrokeshire. The venues for all 'out ground' matches have yet to be agreed and will be announced sometime next month.

If history is created, the match against Surrey will start at 10.45 am and will be played on a 50 overs per side basis, so that there would be time for club cricketers to watch Glamorgan players in action before the Pembrokeshire league programme gets underway at 1.45 pm.
