Girl footballers from across the county will be heading for the pitch next month.

Teams from every secondary school in Pembrokeshire are taking part in a new soccer tournament.

The tournament will take place at Manorbier Football Club's ground on Sunday, June 7, in a joint initiative between Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council's sports development arm - and the community of Manorbier.

The girls have got involved in the game through the Sports Council for Wales' 5x60 scheme.

Organised in Pembrokeshire by Sport Pembrokeshire, the 5x60 scheme aims to encourage secondary pupils to take part in extra-curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.

All eight Pembrokeshire secondary schools and Portfield School in Haverfordwest now have dedicated 5x60 officers based in their schools.

Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member responsible for sport, said the council was keen to increase the number of women and girls taking part in sport and physical activity.

"Girls' football is a popular option in all our secondary schools, so this tournament is a welcome initiative - doubly so because of its direct link with an established women's football club at Manorbier."

Russell Jones from Sport Pembrokeshire, and head of the 5x60 programme, said they were pleased at the progress of the programme.

"We've had a terrific response to the tournament from all of the secondary schools. It's testimony to the hard work of the 5x60 officers, and of course the enthusiasm of the players."

He added: "On behalf of Sport Pembrokeshire, I would like to thank Manorbier Community Council for allowing us the use of the ground, and also the football club for facilitating the event."
