The success of two of Wales' top female golfers at the Women's World Cup in South Africa is expected to give a further boost to the rapidly increasing number of Welsh girls taking up the sport. Rising stars Becky Brewerton and Becky Morgan achieved third place for Wales at the Women's World Cup in Sun City last month. They finished on level par and were placed in front of the USA, England and other of the world's top golfing nations. Junior girls club membership has improved across Wales, with Pembrokeshire leading the way. For almost two years, Golf Development Wales in partnership with Sport Pembrokeshire and The Urdd, have been operating a scheme in the county, funded by Towergate Insurance Co. and the Welsh Assembly's Sportsmatch scheme. A dedicated group of club professionals and volunteers work together with the secondary schools, and the most recent statistics show that there has been a 57.5 per cent increase in junior girl members in the six Pembrokeshire clubs since 2004. Pembrokeshire girl golfers are currently doing exceptionally well. Becky Harries has been chosen by The Welsh Ladies Golf Union to train at The Desert Springs Resort in Spain. Also four girls, namely Kirsty Bell (Newport, Pembs.), Ann Marie Dassan (Tenby), Mari MacDougal (Haverfordwest) and Sophie Rees (Milford Haven) have been selected for the Junior Welsh Girls' squad training to be held at the Celtic Manor Resort - which will host the Ryder Cup in 2010. Golf is one way to improve fitness and well-being, and attracting more people to play golf will help achieve objectives set by Health Challenge Wales - a new national focus of efforts to improve health and well-being of people throughout Wales.
