June 14 was a very busy day for Cubs from the Kilgetty Scout Group as 14 of them attended the All Wales Cub Fun Day in Builth Wells. They were accompanied by two leaders and five mums. The theme this year was famous people and Pembrokeshire chose Walt Disney. Each group had to take a game for all children to participate in. They were issued with passports which were stamped after they visited the relevant county. Every county in Wales was there. There was plenty to do, from water games and fishing to hoopla and circus skills, to name just a few - and the weather was glorious. On our way home, we stopped in Llandovery for sausage and chips. We arrived back in Kilgetty just after 7 pm to be met by Gareth Morris from Radio Pembrokeshire, who interviewed me and a few of the Cubs, asking about their day and about the sleepover we were heading off to. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, with parents and Beaver leaders, were already at Clerkenhill, the venue of our sleepover. Tents were already up and the children busy with activities, especially the tractors. Time was spent sorting out their sleeping arrangements - Beavers would be in the party room. Soup was served later on when a head count was done to check our numbers, and which had to be verified by an independent person. Dawn Lewis, of Clerkenhill, kindly did this for us. We were 49 children, four leaders and 14 parents - 67 in all. The record has been broken again this year, with 33,098 sleeping out altogether. It was a long time until everyone was asleep, but by 12, all was quiet - until 5 am, when the children were woken up by the donkeys! After breakfast, we all had to clean our teeth, not a usual activity at camp I must admit; we do have to nag! We were given the toothpaste and all cleaned our teeth together - an interesting sight! Beavers then went on their adventure walk as part of their badge work and Cubs and Scouts played frisbee golf. Winners of the golf with the lowest score were Cub Oliver North and Scout Kyran Kelley. The winning team for Beavers was the Golden Gun Group. Well done. Each child went home with a goody bag which contained Top Trumps, toothpaste and various leaflets, and the girls also had bath bombs - I expect they all smell nice. We had other items to use as prizes, including a DVD player which we'll use at other events. Everyone enjoyed the overnight stay at Clerkenhill and our thanks to Dawn Lewis for making us welcome. Thanks must also go to all the parents who helped - we can't manage without them. And I must not forget the leaders too. Now we're looking forward to camps; the Scouts are off to the Malvern Challenge near Cheltenham and the Cubs to Blackpool Mill the first weekend of July and will be joined by a few Beavers for one night. On July 21, we are walking to Wiseman's Bridge from the hut for a barbecue on the beach. This is the last meeting before the school holidays. Numbers are rapidly growing in Beavers and Cubs and we are in urgent need of more adult help. Is there anyone interested in joining our team?
