Interested in finding out more about your surroundings? Everyone can through a diverse range of local events, co-ordinated by Pembrokeshire Biodiversity Partnership, for Wales Biodiversity Week.

A selection of events offers the opportunity to see seabirds, moths and butterflies at close range, detect bats and spot porpoises.

Discover how you can have your own special patch for wildlife in your garden and contribute to a national bird survey. Help marine life survive by cleaning up the beaches. Meet the Shark Trust at Pembrokeshire Fish Week open day and explore the underwater world in Pembrokeshire.

The week aims to give everyone the possibility to appreciate the variety and richness of all living things in the local surroundings through a wide choice of biodiversity events.

THE BIODIVERSITY WEEK EVENT PROGRAMME

Saturday, June 19: Adopt-a-beach litter pick and survey, 10.30 am - 12.30 pm (free). Collect every item of litter from a 100m stretch of beach, above the strandline, recording every item on data sheets. Carry out a visual survey of larger litter items over a 1,000m stretch. Porpoise Watch: Local expert available between 11 am and 4 pm (free). Join local experts to look for porpoise and other marine wildlife. Find out about all their life history. Bring sensible clothing, refreshments and binoculars if you have them. Strumble Head (limited parking). Biodiversity and Butterflies 9.30 am - 4 pm (free): Look at the diversity of butterflies we have in Pembrokeshire. Explore the ways that communities can work to encourage their preservation through the development of wildlife areas and the use of appropriate plant species and management techniques. Introducing communities to the value of getting involved in surveys, as a means of building up a picture of the species we have in Pembrokeshire. Booking Essential. Lawrenny Village Hall. Moth trapping at Dowrog Common, 7.30 - 10.30 pm (12 midnight if lots of moths - free): The event will include a quick introduction to moths and moth trapping followed by the collection and identification of any moths caught. Sunday, June 20: Life on the Shore: 1 - 4 pm (£1.50 children, £3.00 adults, charity event). Bird Survey, (for one hour, free): Help count Starling, House sparrow and Bullfinch for an hour. These species have been chosen because of the rapid decline in numbers over the last 10 years. Learn to Fish Day: (morning and afternoon sessions, free). Learn to fish at a first class fishery run by former world champion Ian Heaps, who will be on hand to give a demonstration of fishing techniques.
