How do you increase the chances of your dog being found easily if he gets lost or stolen? The solution is microchipping and you can take advantage of this when Dogs Trust Microchipping Roadshow comes to Pembrokeshire from October 12. The charity will be offering free microchipping to all dogs whose owners are receiving benefits or a pension. To all others, microchipping will be available at the specially subsidised rate of £9.50 - a vet could charge up to £20-£30 for this procedure. Immediate and on-the-spot microchipping is available in the following areas: October 12 - Pembroke Town Hall, Main Street, Pembroke, 10 am - 4 pm. October 13 - Neyland Athletic Club, Neyland, 10 am - 4 pm. October 14 - The Pavilion, Lower Race Course, Haverfordwest, 10 am - 4 pm. October 15 - Town Hall, Market Square, Fishguard, 10 am - 4 pm. Dogs Trust regional campaigns officer for Wales, Sian Edwards, explains: "Many people think nothing of getting their car or household property marked in case of theft, so getting your dog microchipped is the next logical step. It's a simple, painless procedure which can help trace your dog if he unfortunately does get lost or stolen." Dogs must be on a lead with a handler aged 18 or over. Proof of benefit or pension is also required. Microchipping is a painless procedure when the chip is inserted under the loose skin at the back of the dog's neck. The microchip carries an identity number and if he should become lost or stolen, anyone finding him can take him to the local dog warden. When scanned the ID number is matched to an extensive database, which then reveals the dog's name and true address. Dog and owner can then be happily reunited.
