Since taking over as head professional at Trefloyne Golf Club, Penally, 12 months ago, Christine Burton has been proving a big hit both on and off the course. After making headlines by becoming Wales's only fully-qualified woman golf professional, Australian- born Christine teed-off to a successful first year. "It has been an interesting year and I think golfers have found it a refreshing experience to have a woman professional," Christine told the Observer. "I have received a very warm welcome in the area and have settled in well," she said. "It is a lovely area with friendly people and a laid back lifestyle, just like me," she smiled. Christine, whose father was also a golf professional, grew up around the game, but it was only after she left school and began to help her dad in his pro shop that she started to take the game seriously. Before turning pro in 1990, Christine won a number of championship titles and national competitions and also played stateside golf for South Australia. In 1991, '92 and '93, she was a member of the European Ladies Tour. As head professional at Trefloyne, Christine has been keen to fulfil all aspects of her position and has given the pro shop a new look, as well as promoting a junior and ladies' section. Indeed, junior development is particularly high on Christine's list of priorities. As mother of two, she understands what is required to teach juniors - patience, understanding, encouragement, enthusiasm and a caring and fun environment in which to learn. The popular coaching courses are run for juniors aged three-and-a-half and upwards and begin again in March. Meanwhile, the pro shop has also undergone a transformation and is now well-stocked with a huge range of golf clothing and equipment for ladies, men and juniors. All the top golfing makes are available, including Cobra, Wilson, Cleveland, Titleist, Footjoy and Ecco. In addition, a new selection of Ben Ross attire and equipment is also in stock. "We pride ourselves on providing a friendly service and giving good advice to our customers which is based on our sound knowledge of the sport," said Christine, who is helped in the shop by assistant, Scott Davies, also a keen golfer. And to celebrate Christine's first birthday at the club, the shop has various special offers. There is also a special raffle with 15 prizes, the first being a Cobra cart bag and trombone trolley, valued at £150. Christine is also marking her first anniversary with an Australia Day competition next Saturday, January 28. Open to any golfers (men, women or juniors) with a handicap, the contest will take the form of an individual stableford. Tee times are between 9.30 and 11.15 am and there are some great prizes up for grabs. Entry is £5 for members and £10 non-members. At the halfway stage, there will be a traditional Australian sausage sizzle served. "It promises to be a fun day and we hope to get a good entry," Christine added.
