A Bank Holiday attraction for competitors and spectators alike was the Vintage Ploughing Match organised by the Llangolman (Clynderwen) and district Society and held this year at the Shire Horse Farm, Carnhuan, near Eglwyswrw.

Ploughing matches have long been part of the country calendar, but specialist matches for the skilled craftsman using ploughs manufactured up to 70 years ago are a much more recent innovation. Using classic ploughs and vintage tractors - and two teams of horses - some splendid work was produced by the 55 competitors from across South Wales and many from as far afield as the Isle of Man, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

In most cases these ploughs, and some tractors, have lain neglected in overgrown hedgerows or the back of a dusty barn for very many years before being rediscovered and restored to good running order and a superb working condition. Results (judges - Messrs. Ellis Davies (Gower), Evan Watkins, (Montgomery), Roy Morgan, (Letterston), Aled Morgan, (Ponthirwaun), Wyn Jenkins, (Rhydlewis) and Nigel Vickers, (Chester) were: High cut - 1. John Milnes, Rotherham; 2. Robert irving, Cornwall; 3. Brenig Bryan, Llawhaden; 4. Vernon Davies, Brecon.

Ton Bradley, Monmouth; 3. Emlyn Jones, Machynlleth; 4. Stuart Burden, Rotherham. Novice - 1. Iestyn James, Cardigan; 2. Jeremy Jacobs, Bridgend; 3. Gwyn Lewis, Maenclochog; 4. John Evans, Eglwyswrw.
