This year is the 90th anniversary of the National Garden Scheme, which since its beginning has donated over £50 million pounds to charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie (writes Liz O’Neill, assistant county organiser, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire National Garden Scheme).

We feel not enough people have even heard of us, so we’re keen to let everyone know what we do. Volunteers with gardens that they enjoy, and would like others to share, open for the National Garden Scheme. The money received goes to several charities, often being the biggest single donor to them. Of course, the gardens must have sufficient interest for 40 minutes at least, or combine with another garden nearby.

The first gardens to open for this year in our area are The Crystal Garden, near St. Davids, on Easter Sunday, April 16, Llwyngarreg, Llanfallteg, on Easter Monday, April 17, Treffgarne Hall, Wolfscastle, on April 30, and Moorland Cottage Plants and Gardens, near Crymych, on May 1.

These are dates to put on your calendar, and there are lots more details, as well as information on joining the scheme, on the National Garden Scheme website ngs.org.uk

Even if you can’t make the open days, many garden owners are happy to open by arrangement at other times - all it takes is a ’phone call!

So come and enjoy the beauty of a well-tended garden, maybe indulge in some home-made cake and come away inspired to grow some of the gorgeous plants and stimulated by any good ideas you’ve picked up.
