Fifteen ladies from Lamphey and District Women's Institute are helping to create a splash of colour at the village's picturesque railway station. The pretty rural station, situated on the Pembroke Dock to Whitland line, has been lovingly cared for since March 2004 when the ladies decided to spruce up the tired borders along the platform. The station was also adopted by local resident Lee McCartney in January 2005 as part of Arriva Trains Wales' 'Adopt a Station' scheme, which encourages communities to take pride in their railway stations. Speaking on behalf of the Women's Institute, Tessa Griffiths, said: "Our group consists of around 50 members and there are 15 of us who tend the gardens at the station. We meet once a month in the Village Hall and the gardening team is split into five teams working on a roster basis." She continued: "From March onwards, we gather every Monday morning at the station so that we can meet the boys from the station maintenance team who are very helpful in taking away our clippings and garden waste. We've also got to know many of the drivers and conductors who often give us a wave as they pass through. "Many of the plants at the station are grown from cuttings donated by the members or local residents. We also applied to Yorkshire Tea for a 'Trees for Life' community bursary and were successful in obtaining £100 towards improving the station garden. It really is an excellent way of meeting friends and keeping active in the outdoors to ensure the station looks its best." Julian Viggers, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: "We are very grateful for the excellent work Tessa and her group have undertaken at the station. With many tourists travelling to the area by train, it's important that the stations give a good first impression to visitors." He continued: "Their dedication is a great example of local communities taking pride in their stations and engaging with us to keep them in the best possible condition." In recognition of their hard work, the ladies are now looking forward to a day out by train courtesy of Arriva Trains Wales.

Tessa Griffiths is presented with a commemorative plaque from Julian Viggers, station manager of Arriva Trains Wales.
