The new £450,000 all-weather artificial turf pitch at Greenhill School, Tenby, was officially opened over the holiday weekend.
But instead of a normal plaque unveiling ceremony, the floodlit pitch was christened with a soccer match between a team from the nearby leisure centre and a Pembrokeshire County Council XI. The council side - chosen and captained by Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for sport and leisure - contained some high profile names from the world of local government.
They included such luminaries as deputy cabinet members, Clrs. Jamie Adams and Mike Evans and Clr. Mark Edwards, as well as Ian Westley, the council's director of environment and transportation and Mark Lewis, director of finance and leisure.
Despite their presence, the council XI went down by three goals to two.
Greenhill PE teacher, Jonathon Owen, grabbed a brace of goals, while ex-Welsh League player Mike Lewis scored a third for the leisure centre, captained by centre manager, Rob Thomas.
Richard Bullock scored twice for the council. The leisure centre team members were Lewis Hurlow, Mark Harries, Deryn Brace, Matthew Davies, Chris Oliver, Angela Nichols, Rob Thomas, Mike Lewis, Oliver Simon, Jamie Lewis, Johnny Owen. The ref was Dean Hurlow.
"We thought playing a soccer match would be more appropriate to officially open the facility rather than have someone unveil the usual plaque" explained Clr. Rob Lewis.
"Unfortunately, we were up against a very useful team and just lost out. However, I shall be looking at some of my council colleagues in a rather different light from now on after seeing them perform in the sporting arena, though I admit there were some very tired limbs afterwards."
The council-owned pitch, which is for community and school use, was funded with money from the Big Lottery Fund and it will enable all sports - particularly hockey and football - to be played throughout the year.
