Family and friends of a 13-year-old boy who lost his battle with cancer have raised £2,000 to help pay for the care and treatment of other Pembrokeshire children.

Charity fund-raisers, the Evergreen Nomads, and regulars at their base, Tenby's Evergreen pub, collected the money at various fund-raising events such as BBQs and sporting tournaments. They decided to donate the funds to West Wales General Hospital, in Carmarthen, where Daniel Burrows, of Tenby, received treatment over several years.

His mum Cheryl said: "Daniel received the best care possible at West Wales General Hospital and we will always be grateful for the support offered by staff. "If it wasn't for Cilgerran Children's Ward at West Wales General we would have been forced to make a lot more long and difficult journeys to Cardiff." Presenting the cheque to the ward was Bob Willing and James Lawrence, who help organise fund- raising for the Evergreen Nomands.

Bob said: "We are really pleased to be donating this money as we know it will be used to care for other children from Pembrokeshire and across West Wales."

James added: "We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part and donated money to this cause." Receiving the cheque were paediatric oncology outreach nurse Rowena Jones and Cilgerran Ward sister Michelle Gardner.

The money will be used to buy a Chester Chest, which is a device which helps train nurses to use central lines for chemotherapy and for general training on the ward.

Rowena said: "Daniel was a patient at West Wales General Hospital for many years and during that time he brought staff a lot of joy."

Michelle added: "We are very grateful for this donation and the money will be used to fund much-needed equipment and staff training to ensure that we can continue to care for children in West Wales."
