A capital funding bid has been made to Pembrokeshire County Council for a much-needed walkway at Narberth Bridge. It is hoped it will be made possible in the next financial year, the town's county councillor, Wynne Evans, said this week. The matter was raised at last week's town council meeting when Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, asked what progress was being made on the scheme. Clr. Evans says he has had site visits with senior officers of the local authority, including the director who has responsibility for the project. Said Clr. Evans: "I feel that sometimes we just get promises, but I feel more confident this time that the bid will be more successful, especially with much more proposed development in the Narberth Bridge area over the next 12 months and the high volume of traffic which uses this road. "Safety is paramount," he added. Clr. Evans went on to explain that the application was for a walkway rather than a footpath because of the dangers of crossing points on busy bends in the road. "This would mean creating a tarmac surface of approximately one to five metres to enable pedestrians to walk in safety to town," said Clr. Evans. "The problem of the preservation of trees that line the road will also have to be looked into," he continued. "Having thought at one time, we were really going to have a pavement after 31 years of trying, it is disappointing, but I still await the decision of Pembrokeshire County Council, and I am ever hopeful and resourceful to finally see a happy conclusion to this most pressing issue of safety," Clr. Evans concluded.
