President Peter Howells and secretary Mike Richards, of the Pembrokeshire Civil Service Bowling Association, were 'bowled over' at the final total of £5,000 towards the association's fund-raising on behalf of the Make a Wish Foundation UK.

Mike said: "Local businesses and members of the public have been tremendously generous in their support."

The foundation aims to grant a magical wish to children and young people suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

Mike added: "The money helps bring much happiness to some very deserving children and their families. Last year, the association raised £1,250, which was superb, but the effort put in by members this year has been absolutely magnificent."

All the monies raised will go towards helping children in Wales to realise a dream and a significant element will be 'ring fenced' to support the wishes of children in Pembrokeshire.

Becky Edney, who received the cheque on behalf of the foundation, reported that a six-year-old boy from Haverfordwest would soon be visiting Father Christmas in Lapland and other requests would be considered.

Parents or friends of young children who may benefit from the money need simply apply to the Make a Wish Foundation - details of which can be found on their website.
