Even the inclement weather could not spoil the enthusiasm of all at the Manorbier Fun Festival held at Manorbier Castle on Sunday, by kind permission of the owners. The Trustees of the Manorbier and District Community Association were demonstrating that the charity was set-up to benefit the whole community and the Fun Festival was a great success despite the rain. It commenced with the Jameston Crier (Mr. Des Brown) ringing his bell announcing the start of the Duck Race. A Welly throwing contest took place at the same time. The rain, sand and stream ensured the participants got very wet. The ducks loved it, but several of their enthusiastic followers retired at this point to go home and dry out. The remaining intrepid fun-lovers trekked up to the castle where they joined a queue of people waiting for the 'witching hour' of 6 pm. All then entered over the draw-bridge and into the grounds where they were straight away entertained with a Medieval Enactment by The Knights Templars. If after this people felt hungry or thirsty there was a pig roast, tea, coffee, fruit juice, beer and wine available. Families were free to wander from stall to stall, each of which belonged to a village organisation. The children could get their faces painted and dip biscuits or fruit into a chocolate fountain. All could test their skills at the coconut shy, the skittles, or maybe take a chance at batting the rat or trying any of the other games on offer. No-one needed to go home empty handed as there were edible goodies, plants and up-market bric-a-brac to be purchased. For those of an enquiring mind, there were display boards explaining the work carried out by the Church Restoration Group and the ongoing work of the Fishponds Restoration Group. The Pembrokeshire Junior Jazz Band entertained everyone with people sitting happily in the rain listening to the playing of these talented young people. The culmination of the festivities was that the tired organisers said 'never again," but are already planning next year's event. The Trustees would like to thank the following: Texaco for sponsoring all the publicity; all the participating organisations for their support; all who donated and everyone who came and supported the event; the Public Address organiser; all those who manned the tea tent, the bar and those who cooked and served the pig roast; the football and cricket club members for supplying the muscle power needed to move the tables and chairs, etc., in and out of the grounds. These were kindly supplied by Manorbier Range.
